Community Giving

Giving Back to the Community

From our founding in 1962, have been guided by the philosophy that as owners of a media we have a responsibility to give cash and media exposure to a wide variety of community causes.

Donated Billboard Advertising

Just a few of our most recent donated billboards include The Walk Against Autism, Lets’ Celebrate Diversity, our annual Anti-Smoking Billboard Contest with Congresswomen Rosa Delauro, our Annual gift to Bridges’ Folks on Spokes campaign, the Swim Across the Sound, and regular special promotions for the Shubert Theater in New Haven. In 2006, with our new website, we decided to showcase our donated signs. (Building this showcase will take time, as we must first “dig” up the old photographs.)

Cash Donations

Beginning with the year 2004, and in addition to our donated outdoor advertising space, we made a planned effort to give generously to charities in the cities where we operate our signs. As an example to others, and as a “prod” to ensure we “walk the way we talk”, we have decided to set targets and publish each year our gross annual corporate cash donations.

Top recipients in 2006 included a Fifty-Thousand Dollar ($50,000) gift (part of a $250,000 committment) to the Capital Campaign "Now for The Future of Silver Lake", supporting the United Church of Christ Silver Lake Summer Youth Conferance Center,  a ten thousand dollar ($10,000) gift to Bethel Shelter for the homeless in Milford CT, a ten thousand ($10,000) gift to Wightwood School of Brandford CT, to help fund a development and grants office, and $5,000 to Bridges Mental Health Services.  Other recipients included The Milford Public Library ($2,000), Amnesty International, ($1,250) Lamdda Legal ($1,000) The Bridgeport Music and Arts Center for Humanity ($1,000), New Haven's Workforce Aliance Youth at Work ($1,000), Groundwork Bridgeport, ($500), and the Milford Anti-Hate Task Force ($500), to name a few.  Barrett Outdoor Communications Inc. makes our donation decisions based on our personal relationship with and knowledge of our local communities.
